Nepal government has banned strikes on Telecom services and 24 other services. The government has added services related to telephone and internet in Essential Services and enforced the fresh ruling.

The Ministry of Home Affairs declared the ruling in accordance with subsection 1 of Section 3 in the Essential Services Operation Act 2014. The ruling now will deem strikes or bandh that compromise the flow of telephone or internet services including others, a criminal act subject to prosecution of the instigators.

The decision to issue a strike ban on 25 essential services came following a recent meeting of the Council of Ministers.

Strike Ban on Telecom, Postal, etc.

Essential Service now includes services related to cable, telephone, and internet services. Similarly, services by the Department of Consular Services, Department of Passport, postal, and telegram are also no-strike-zone services. The Home Ministry also prohibits strikes on transportation services from land, water, and air. The same applies to airport runways, airplanes repair, and maintenance services.

Other essential Service areas are water supply, tourism including hotel, motel, resort, etc., supply of petroleum products, etc. Health-related services in hospitals, health posts, the ambulance medicines industry, waste management are also on the list.

Banks, Foods, and Disaster Warning Systems

Likewise, the government also bans strikes on banking, insurance, insurance, electricity, storage, and distribution of consumer products. This includes staple items such as grains, edible oil, salt, etc. The ruling also applies to electricity distribution, weather, and flood forecast, warning information systems during possible disasters, hand sanitizer, veterinary service, etc.

The no-strike ban also applies to government press, services related to defense affairs, arms, ammunition, or manufacturing of goods and services which concern national security, and communication.

Declaring a ban on strike on essential services will keep the distribution of vital services going. Besides, it will discourage any unwanted interferences from dissenting individuals or groups.
