Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel lauded the team’s character and strength as they came back from a 0-2 deficit against Liverpool to snatch a point in their Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. In a breathless encounter between the two top sides, Chelsea battled back after going down 0-2 early in the first half.

Liverpool, who were depleted due to Covid-19 setbacks, took the lead through Sadio Mane in as early as the 9th-minute following which Mohamed Salah worked his magic to make it 2-0 inside the first 30 minutes.

It looked like Liverpool, who were without their Covid-19 positive manager Jurgen Klopp on the sidelines on Sunday, would run riot but Chelsea kept their composure and did not lose heart.

Chelsea pulled one back when Mateo Kovacic majestically volleyed in off a post from the edge of the box after a punched clearance by Liverpool’s reserve keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Four minutes later, Chelsea were level when Pulisic latched onto a pass by N’Golo Kante that beat Liverpool’s offside trap and the American forward coolly lifted the ball over Kelleher into the net.

Both sides had opportunities to find the winner and snatch three full points but goalkeepers Mendy and Kelleher were on top of their games to deny Salah and Pulisic, respectively in the 2nd half.

“And not only the response but also the start, we were so strong from the very start. It made it even harder to be two-zero down because we had the feeling we should be two-zero up. It makes things against Liverpool super, super tough.

“I mean it is a big match against a big opponent, full of individual quality and energy. So it was a big response and given the circumstances and where we come from and how we played, it was exceptional,” Tuchel said, lauding his team for their gritty display on Sunday.

CAN MANCHESTER CITY BE STOPPED?

The draw between the two faltering title-chasers left Manchester City 10 points clear in the title race. Chelsea are 2nd with 43 points from 21 matches, 10 points less than City who defeated Arsenal 2-1 in a thriller on Saturday. Liverpool, who have a game in hand over Chelsea and City, have 42 points.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk said it was not inevitable that City would end up with the title.

“Nothing is impossible,” he told the BBC. “It’s a big gap but it’s football and anything can happen.”
