Right-handed batter Oshada Fernando found his way into the national setup as Sri Lanka named an 18-member squad for their upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. The 30-year-old Fernando was dropped for the Test series against India earlier this year, but has managed to stake his claim back to the Sri Lankan team after impressive performances in the National Super League 4-day tournament.
Playing for Kandy, the right-hander notched 721 runs from six matches at an average of 80.11 with four centuries and three half-centuries. Pathum Nissanka, who didn’t play the second Test against India due to a back injury, failed to recover in time. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has also named uncapped Kamil Mishara and Dilshan Madushanka for the red-ball series.
Even as Mishara has already played T20Is for the Sri Lankans, Madushanka is yet to don the national jersey. Lahiru Thirimanne, Charith Asalanka, Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara weren’t picked for the series. Right-arm fast bowler Kasun Rajitha has also made a comeback after last playing Test cricket against South Africa way back in 2020.
Kamindu Mendis, in the meantime, replaced Roshen Silva, who was “included in the original squad but indicated his inability to tour.” Jeffrey Vandersay, who didn’t get a chance to play in India despite being in the squad, has been dropped. Asitha Fernando, Ramesh Mendis and Suminda Lakshan have been included in the squad.
