Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s LIVE coverage of the first ODI between India and South Africa from Boland Park in Paarl. |
SA 92/3 in 22 overs: A deft paddle sweep by Bavuma for a couple behind the keeper. Drives the next one straight off the backfoot for one more. Edged and chance! Ashwin lures vd Dussen with a full one on off and he drives and gets a thick edge that bounces off Pant’s gloves. A single for him on the off side to end the over.
SA 86/3 in 21 overs: FOUR! vd Dussen gets down on one knee and sweeps a full one from Chahal to the square leg boundary. Came in with the angle into him and a thick inside edge for a quick single.
SA 80/3 in 20 overs: Bavuma chipped this one from Ashwin into the air and just short of Kohli at mid on. Two more singles. WIDE! Ashwin strays in line and goes down leg. Ashwin gets one to turn sharply into vd Dussen and rap him high above the pad.
SA 76/3 in 19 overs: Chahal to vd Dussen the new batter. He is offered a gift on off stump and he drives it straight to mid on for a dot. FOUR! Reverse-sweeps it to deep point as Chahal pitches it up on the legs. A thick edge this time runs past the slip for two more.
SA 70/3 in 18 overs: A couple of singles to start the over. Markram drove a fuller one from Ashwin on the stump to mid off and tries to steal one. OUT! That was too risky and Venkatesh effects a direct hit at the non-striker’s end. Aiden Markram run out (Venkatesh Iyer) 4(11b 0x4 0x6). A couple for Bavuma through mid wicket off the backfoot.
SA 66/2 in 17 overs: A great over by Chahal. He had Markram very uncomfortable there. Got one to drift away from him on a length and beat his outside edge.
SA 65/2 in 16 overs: Ashwin to continue after the break. OUT! Bowled him! It skidded into de Kock with the angle, kept low and he missed it trying to make room on the off and cut. Quinton de Kock b Ravichandran Ashwin 27(41b 2×4 0x6). Markram is the new man in. Three easy singles as Ashwin floats it up on off. FOUR! Bavuma steps out and drives the a full one on off through covers.
DRINKS BREAK – SOUTH AFRICA 58/1 IN 15 OVERS
SA 58/1 in 15 overs: More spin as Chahal comes on from the other end. Very full from Chahal and the batters collect four easy singles. The next one is slightly more flighted and de Kock presses forward to defend. A single for de Kock at cover to end the over.
SA 53/1 in 14 overs: Ashwin to de Kock from round the wicket. Just a single from the over. Ashwin keeps it on and around off to Bavuma, who gets a leading edge on one that keeps its line before missing a paddle sweep. A direct-hit on the last ball at non-striker’s end has Ashwin interested by TV replay confirms de Kock was in by a country mile.
SA 52/1 in 13 overs: Tidy maiden over from Thakur. He keeps Bavuma quiet with a straight line on a good length. Gets the last one to move away a bit outside off and beats Bavuma’s attempted drive.
SA 52/1 in 12 overs: Ashwin into the attack. Goes full on de Kock’s toes first ball and he tucks it to square leg for a single. Another single for Bavuma off the backfoot at square leg. Dropped! de Kock went for a lusty heave outside off and edged it to backward point, where Shreyas Iyer misses the catch diving to his left; a couple of runs for him. Ashwin keeps it a touch too full and two easy singles to end the over.
SA 46/1 in 11 overs: FOUR! Thakur feeds de Kock a full one outside off and he latches onto it with a uppish drive over mid on and to the boundary. Misses a cheeky ramp shot, the ball lands in front of him and de Kock steals a single. Two more singles to end the over. Thakur keeps it on the stumps after that first loose ball.
SA 39/1 in 10 overs: Bhuvi to continue from the other end. Bavuma looks to break the shackles as he steps out and launches it to deep mid wicket. But the slowness of the pitch means it stops short of the boundary and Bavuma collects a couple. A single for Bavuma at backward point. Bhuvi is handed a warning for running in the danger area. A risky single for de Kock at mid on. De Kock fends the last one to Bhuvi. End of powerplay!
SA 35/1 in 9 overs: First change in bowling as Shardul Thakur replaces Bumrah. First one is very wide outside off and Bavuma goes for a expansive drive but almost chops on as it goes off his inside edge; just a single at fine leg. Wide down leg and Pant thinks de Kock has got some bat on it. Just as Rahul contemplates a review the umpire signals a NO-BALL! de Kock hands a catch straight to mid on on a full-toss off the free hit. Driven straight down the ground but Thakur gets a hand to it to keep it to a single. Some serious lack of pace on the wicket here. Bavuma has to shimmy down the pitch to flick it to square leg for one.
SA 31/1 in 8 overs: Bavuma scurries for another single at mid off after gently tapping Bhuvi. de Kock tucks a fuller one on the legs to fine leg for one more. Bavuma trickles another one to mid off for a quick single. de Kock drives into the ground and it goes behind the bowler for a couple.
SA 26/1 in 7 overs: Bumrah to bowl his fourth. de Kock clips it to fine leg for a single. Bumrah pins Bavuma back with an unerring line that comes on a length. A skiddy almost knocks Bavuma’s stumps over as he goes back and defends. A quick single for him off the last ball at mid off.
SA 24/1 in 6 overs: Bhuvi gets it to move again and beat de Kock outside edge. A little too straight this time and de Kock tucks it fine for a single. Jagged into Bavuma and he is lucky to get an inside edge onto his pads. Edged and taken behind but Pant is not sure if that went straight into his gloves or it hit the ground. Soft signal is not out and umpires go upstairs. The ball has clearly bounced in front of the gloves and Bavuma survives.
SA 23/1 in 5 overs: Bumrah angles the first one away from Malan and he is beaten with some low bounce. OUT! Similar line and length and Malan gets a feather on it as Pant pouches it behind. Janneman Malan c Rishabh Pant b Jasprit Bumrah 6(10b 1×4 0x6). Skipper Bavuma the new man in. A thick edge as he pokes outside and it goes to second slip on the bounce. This one slides down leg but Bavuma is beaten for some late in-swing. FOUR! Bavuma drives beautifully through the covers and to the boundary.
SA 19/0 in 4 overs: FOUR! Length just outside off from Bhuvi and Malan cuts and Venkatesh Iyer lets it through his legs at backward point. Some awkward bounce seems to have deceived him. Bhuvi keeps it straighter on a length and Malan defends three balls. A thick outside edge and a single for him at third man.
SA 14/0 in 3 overs: Bumrah continues. Malan to face his first ball. Angles it into him from a length on the first couple of balls and Malan defends it back. He is off the mark with a single to third man. Angled across from de Kock and he leaves. FOUR! Serenely through covers as Bumrah offers width outside off.
SA 9/0 in 2 overs: Bhuvneshwar from the other end. A couple off the first ball with a well-timed drive through covers. Swing! Pitched on a length and Bhuvi got it to move away from de Kock’s outside edge. WIDE! This one goes down leg side. Stifled LBW appeal and turned down! It nipped into de Kock from a length and rammed into his back pad. Height an issue there. Two dots to end the over.
SA 6/0 in 1 over: Bumrah to de Kock over the wicket. A couple of dots to start with as Bumrah goes full on the legs. WIDE! Strays down leg. FOUR LEG-BYES! Loose ball on the legs and it brushes off de Kock’s pads to run away to the boundary. A couple of dots later Bumrah goes for a full-toss and de Kock misqueues it to fine leg for a single. Messy first over.
The Indian team is in a huddle with KL Rahul leading the pep talk. Quinton de Kock and Jannemann Malan will open the batting. Pant and de Kock share a warm moment on the pitch. The South Africans take a knee against all forms of discrimination.
13-58 IST: Done with the national anthems. Live action coming up soon.
India Playing XI: Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul (c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (wk), Venkatesh Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal.
South Africa XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma (c), Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi.
WHAT THE CAPTAINS SAID Bavuma: Wicket looks a bit dry. Would like to make use of the best of the batting conditions. Hopefully it slows up and the slower bowlers can get in the game. Hard to get away from the high of the Tests. But will have to focus on today, different format; have to ensure our basics are in touch. Opportunity for us as a one-day team to get our game in order. Have got a standard team. Marco comes in, obviously we don’t have KG available. Two spinners. KL Rahul: Would’ve wanted to bat first. We’re always ready to do both things. Looks a little bit dry. Have some quality spinners in our attack. With Bumrah and Bhuvi starting, hopefully they’ll get a couple early with the swing. Venkatesh Iyer debuting, Shreyas Iyer to bat at four. Last couple of days and right after Tests there was a lot going on. Emotional for the team. Lot of us have debuted under Virat. Obviously he’s still with us and integral part of the team. Just want to try out few things in terms of tactics and strategies. Personnel will not change much. Want to give them a good run. Experimentation doesn’t mean we’ll go in and start hitting from ball one. |
13-35: Jansen will debut as Rabada is rested for the series. For India, Venkatesh Iyer will debut and Rahul confirms Chahal and Shreyas Iyer will play today.
TOSS: Temba Bavuma wins the toss and South Africa will bat first.
13-28 IST: The news from Paarl is that Venkatesh Iyer and Marco Jansen are set to make their ODI debuts for their respective sides. KL Rahul will shortly walk to the middle for his maiden ODI toss as India captain.
Blue skies and gleaming sunshine awaits us at Boland Park

MATCH PREVIEW
Virat Kohli will play his first international game in seven years free from the responsibility of captaincy in all formats when India takes on South Africa in the first of three one-day internationals at Boland Park here.
All eyes will also be on KL Rahul, who leads the Indian team in the ODI series in the absence of Rohit Sharma.
Kohli’s supporters and well-wishers of Indian cricket will hope that Kohli puts his differences with the BCCI aside in the interest of the team, and sizzle with the bat. Rahul will be expected to turn to Kohli for advice during the series. Vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah said on the eve of the series that Kohli “will always be a leader” in the team.
With the new leadership and support staff, India will look to win the series with an eye on the 2023 World Cup. The last time a full strength India played an ODI series was at home against England in March, 2021. FULL PREVIEW
