India were deemed to seal their first series win in South Africa after a thumping 113-run victory over the Dean Elgar-led side in Centurion. But despite being 1 down in the series, the South African team rose up to the challenge and pulled off a spectacular result, sealing a 2-1 series victory by chasing down 212 in the tense Cape Town Test.

Cape Town Test, Day 4: Highlights

Set 212 to win against one of the best bowling attacks in modern times, South Africa stormed to a seven-wicket win in the second session of Day 4 amid lengthening shadows and emotional celebrations. A young Keegan Petersen played one of his best knocks to lead South Africa to a stunning win amid the DRS controversy at Newlands.

Petersen sets up comeback series win for SA

Petersen defied the conditions and played beautifully for his career-best score from 113 balls before he directed a Shardul Thakur delivery onto his stumps. It came on the back of a fine 72 in the first innings. Petersen finishes the series as the leading run-scorer with 276 in six innings, providing South Africa with some solidity in the number three position that has been missing for some time.

After all the drama and stump-mic theatrics surrounding the DRS review against Dean Elgar on Day 3, a million eyes were glued on Virat Kohli and his men at Newlands, Cape Town on Friday. While South Africa needed 111 runs to win, India were in search of eight wickets in their quest to script history on South African soil.

The first 30 minutes saw another DRS controversy, another war of words between Virat Kohli and Rassie van der Dussen, a dropped catch off a well-set Keegan Petersen–a while later, the Indian captain was seen biting his nails in the slip cordon as the series and Cape Town Test had slipped beyond India’s reach.

Petersen and van der Dussen stitched a 54-run stand for the third wicket before Thakur removed Petersen in the first session, but van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma dug in at lunch. Petersen’s wicket gave the Indian team some hope and they tried to exploit the conditions with some superb seam bowling on a spiteful Newlands pitch.

But Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma made sure that South Africa did not suffer any further setback as the SA duo finished the job in the afternoon session on a difficult, seaming wicket.

DRS controversies in Cape Town

Virat Kohli lost his cool once again on Friday when the Indian team believed they had Van der Dussen caught behind off seamer Mohammed Shami, though the bowler himself showed no interest and returned to his mark.

Kohli sent the decision for review, and although there was a spike on the ultra-edge technology, the third was ruled that the batsman had hit the ground. Kohli was seen having a word with the onfield umpire Marais Erasmus and then exchanged some colourful words with Van der Dussen, referring to the South African’s little episode with Pant in the second Test.

The episode followed India’s fury on Thursday when they believed they had home captain Dean Elgar dismissed leg before wicket, but after being given out, the ball-tracker technology suggested the delivery was bouncing over the stumps.

Livid with the decision, a fuming Kohli went up to the stumps and said: “Focus on your team as well when they shine the ball at eh, not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.
