Scott Boland could not have asked for a better debut as Australia’s only 2nd men’s indigenous cricketer decimated England in the Boxing Day Ashes Test at his home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In a spell that was quite unbelievable, Boland picked up 6 wickets in just 21 balls as England slipped to 68-all out and an innings and 14-run defeat in the 3rd Test on Tuesday.

England were obliterated in just 2 days and a session in Melbourne as Australia retained the Ashes Urn, taking a 3-0 unbeatable lead.

“Can’t really believe it. We thought we had a chance of winning today when we came in, but just not so quickly,” Boland said after Australia completed an emphatic victory on Tuesday.

Scott Boland won the Mullagh Medal for his Player of the Match performance in the Boxing Day Test against England. He picked up the 3rd-fastest five-wicket haul in the history of Test cricket as he had the numbers of 5 England batters in just 19 balls before he wrapped up the proceedings with a 6th wicket.

Boland also created a new record for the fewest number of runs conceded while picking up a 5-wicket haul on Test debut – 7 runs, going past Australia’s Charles Turner who picked up a 5-wicket haul for 15 runs against England in 1887.

BOLAND THANKS MCG CROWD AFTER HEROICS

Boland, who picked up a wicket in the first innings, ran through the England batting unit on Tuesday morning in front of a vocal MCG crowd that was firmly behind the local hero. After Mitchell Starc removed one of the two overnight batters in Ben Stokes, Boland got Jonny Bairstow out LBW and got the big wicket of Joe Root with a superb delivery that was taken by David Warner at first slip.

He then caught and bowled Mark Wood for his 5th wicket which came in just 18 balls. In his 4th over of the innings, Boland got Ollie Robinson to complete a memorable six-wicket haul.

“I came to know on Christmas Eve, and had a lot of support from teammates and family. It was a big step up from anything that I have played, and I knew it would be tough. I want to thank the crowd for all their support over the last three days, really appreciate it,” Boland said.

“I would like to thank the coaches for getting this chance to play on my homeground, and would also like to thank my parents, my wife and my two kids,” he added.

England will be looking to make sure Australia don’t push for a series sweep when the two teams meet in Sydney for the New Year’s Test, starting January 5.
