For the 16-year-old Passi, who now studies in Wellington College in the United Kingdom, there was a clear correlation between play and positive educational outcomes. “When I visited the primary school for the first time, I saw its dilapidated condition. I spoke to the school principal and found out even attendance was an issue in the school,” said the teenager. “We managed to raise Rs 7 lakh and with the funds, we created a basketball court in the school and also installed floor tiles on a vacant area so that it can be used for assembly and social events.”
Passi was gratified to learn that with the incentive for students to go to school, attendance had improved. “The students are happy with the basketball court. I am delighted to have contributed to the change,” she smiled. “My school experience has been so different to theirs. I want to extend this help to other schools now.”
Lauding Passi’s efforts in collaboration with NGO Education Alliance, Indu Batra, principal of the school, said, “I joined the school in September 2019 and soon after the pandemic struck. So not a lot of development could take place. We also faced a funds crunch. There were mounds of mud lying across the school. When Passi approached us, we suggested a good ground. This is something which is necessary. Playgrounds can make students feel nice.”
Batra said that the basketball court now even attracted the neighbourhood children. “We are now trying to hire a coach so that the students can be trained properly and we can help them participate in tournaments,” said Batra. “The job done by Inaayat is remarkable because her intent was amazing. I wish to build a model school for the students who come here as they really have no resources whatsoever.”
Amitav Virmani, CEO and founder, The Education Alliance, said, “We believe in the power of collaboration. When civil society organisations come together to stimulate change, the result is nothing short of magical. It is a pleasure to see the product of this collaboration in the Andrews Ganj school, where over 400 young children from underprivileged backgrounds learn, play and develop holistically.”
Pradeep Sindhu, director, education department, SDMC, said, “We appreciate the steps taken by the student to develop a playground in the south corporation-run school. The department welcomes active and responsible citizens taking initiatives to create a better future for our children. The corporation has been taking steps like setting up a sports cell, smart classrooms, kitchen gardens, distribution of bicycles and sports equipment, to improve the quality of education in corporation run schools.”
