Speaking to Education Times, Anil Sahasrabudhe, chairman, AICTE, says, “We approved BTech course in five different languages namely, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali and Hindi from July 15, 2021. Many universities showed interest to start BTech courses in regional languages. However, the colleges or universities will have to transparently inform the stakeholders. Recently, Pimpri Chinchwad College Of Engineering (PCCOE) in Pune sought permission to start Engineering course in Marathi.”
“This practice of allowing colleges to start courses in the regional language is in line with NEP 2020. This has been done to make students understand the subject in depth as learning in their mother tongue would make learning simpler. For instance, if some student is proficient with Kannada, he or she must not be forced to learn in English, it would result in low levels of learning.”
Pimpri Chinchwad College Of Engineering, Pune, affiliated to Savitri Bai Phule Pune University got an approval from AICTE to start BTech course in Marathi in July this year.
The whole initiative aims to ensure that students who have done schooling in regional languages are not left out. Most of these students tend to lose confidence and face cultural shock,” he adds.
AICTE has created a support system in terms of translated contents of SWAYAM MOOC courses and good quality books in Indian languages, further adds Sahasrabudhe.
Harbhajan Bansal, dean, academic affairs, Guru Jambeshwar University in Haryana’s Hisar district, says, “We are in the process of discussing the proposal related to the availability of books in Hindi and have not finalised anything so far. When publishers from across the state would get to know that Engineering would be taught in the Hindi language, they would get into the translation of Engineering books in Hindi, after acquiring permission from the author.”
We welcome the initiative of AICTE, but would also want some more clarity on this. If we can start Engineering courses in Hindi, we would do it from the next academic session tentatively in the months of July-August. Also, teachers need some time to prepare for Hindi teaching. Admissions to Engineering courses in Haryana are made by the Haryana State Counselling Society. For teaching Engineering in Hindi, we need additional classrooms and appoint new faculty and non-teaching staff.”
