NEW DELHI: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (undergraduate) 2021 held on Sunday recorded one of the highest attendance in five years. Over 95% of 16.14 lakh aspirants took the single shift pen-paper NEET-UG 2021.

In 2017, 94% of the candidates appeared for the medical entrance test while 2018 saw an all-time high of 97% attendance. Conducted amid the pandemic, a little over 85% candidates appeared for the test in 2020. In 2019, the attendance was 92.7%.

“We are yet to receive reports from all the centres so far. But the trend so far, based on majority of the centre reports we have received, shows over 95% attendance. The cooperation of the state governments has helped us conduct the exams smoothly,” said Vineet Joshi, director general, National Testing Agency (NTA).

The qualifying entrance exam for admission to bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS), bachelor of dental surgery (BDS), bachelor of ayurveda, medicine and surgery (BAMS), bachelor of siddha medicine and surgery (BSMS), bachelor of unani medicine and surgery (BUMS), and bachelor of homeopathic medicine and surgery (BHMS) and BSc (H) Nursing courses of various medical colleges, which include premier medical colleges like AIIMS and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry has been conducted in 13 languages.

Two cases of impersonation were detected in Allahabad and Bengaluru.

“In Allahabad, the candidate left the centre after discrepancies were detected during document verification. The candidate in Bengaluru centre was caught during random verification by the centre observer. When the candidate in the centre Allahabad realised he has been caught, he left the centre. Meanwhile in Bengaluru, the centre observer while cross checking with the photo detected the case of discrepancy. The candidate then signed an undertaking stating that he is appearing for a candidate,” said an NTA official.

“We are looking at other doubtful cases, though the numbers are not high. Could be around 10. If found impersonating, action will be taken against the candidates as per rules,” said Joshi.

Three Covid positive candidates in Kerala were also allowed to take test on Sunday.

“The students were fine and they were allowed to take the test in isolation as per the guidelines of Kerala government,” said Joshi.
