NEW DELHI: Of the many national BJP leaders who were present during the oath-taking of Pushkar Singh Dhami as Uttarakhand chief minister, former Rajasthan CM Vasundhara Raje stood out, with many seeing it as a possible sign of the beginning of the end of the spell of her aloofness from party affairs.
Raje was conspicuous among the cast comprising important members of the Union Cabinet, chief ministers and party office-bearers led by BJP chief J P Nadda. While Raje is also one of the vice-presidents of the party, she — unlike Dushyant Gautam, also a vice president — was not involved with the campaign for Uttarakhand.
Raje took a chopper flight from Dholepur in Rajasthan and reached Dehradun for the oath-taking ceremony.
Assembly polls in Rajasthan is due at the end of 2023, just a few months ahead of the general elections. There will be plenty at stake for BJP as the party had won all 25 seats in 2019 Lok Sabha polls and retaining the seats will be crucial to maintain its winning streak for the third time in a row.
Differences among the state leaders in Rajasthan BJP have been grist for speculation, with many feeling that the lack of co-ordination has kept the party from exploiting Congress regime’s mounting vulnerabilities.
Rajasthan unit chief Satish Punia has been carrying out political activities, but he has rarely been seen with Raje. She celebrated her birthday on March 8 in Baran where over 30 MLAs were present, which was perceived as a show of strength.
