NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien was on Tuesday suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the rest of the session.
The Trinamool MP has been accused of throwing a Rajya Sabha rule book at the Chair while opposing the electoral reforms Bill in the House.
Derek O’Brien became the 13th member to be suspended from the Upper House.
Sasmit Patra, who was in the Chair, said the TMC MP had raised a point of order and the deputy chairman had duly responded to it.
A little later, O’Brien flung the rule book furiously in the direction of the Chair, Patra observed.
“The rule book would have hit the chair, or secretary general or officials sitting at the table,” he said.
The BJP had earlier alleged that the Trinamool Congress member had thrown the rule book on secretary general.
The TMC MP was suspended after the House passed a motion moved by minister of state for parliamentary affairs V Muraleedharan in this regard.
Reacting to his suspension, the Trinamool leader took to Twitter and accused the BJP of making a mockery of Parliament and bulldozing the electoral reform laws just as they had done with the farm laws.
Recalling his last suspension from the House while opposing the farm laws, the TMC MP hoped that the government would once again be forced to take back the electoral reforms law just as it was forced to repeal the farm laws.
Derek O’Brien’s suspension comes even as the stalemate between the government and opposition over the suspension of 12 MPs continues.
The 12 opposition MPs were suspended for the entire winter session for creating a ruckus in the House during the monsoon session on August 11.
The members are Syed Naseer Hussain, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Phulo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, Ripun Bora and Rajmani Patel of the Congress, Priyanka Chaturvedi, Anil Desai of the Shiv Sena, Elamaram Kareem of the CPM, Binoy Viswam of the CPI, Dola Sen and Shanta Chhetri of the Trinamool.
