NEW DELHI: Amid critical remarks of several opposition leaders on the recently released movie, “The Kashmir Files”, home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday met the crew of the film which, he said, was a bold representation of truth, a day after PM Narendra Modi endorsed the movie and said that facts shown in the movie had rattled opposition parties.
“Met with Kashmir Files team today. The truth of the sacrifice, unbearable pain and struggle of Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to leave their homes in their own country, has come to the notice of the whole world through this film, which is a very commendable effort,” Shah tweeted along with his picture with the film crew. The minister said, “The movie will also awaken the society and country at large so that such historical blunders are not repeated in future. I congratulate the entire team for making this film.”
Opposition leaders like former Jammu & Kashmir CM Farooq Abdullah, however, questioned the script of the movie and demanded a fresh probe about what led to the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in the 1990s, which is the central theme of the movie.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, on the other hand, took a swipe at the BJP leaders’ full-throttle endorsement of the movie, saying if “Kashmir Files” can be made, then why not ‘Lakhimpur Files’ to portray the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri.
Abdullah said, “Jagmohan was the governor at that time. He is no more, otherwise, he would have told (the reality). This is the reason I want the case to be investigated. Every film portrays the story in a unique way. It is important that the film portrays exact truth. If you really want it to be investigated, then launch a probe. An honest investigation will help identify the culprits and the reason why such an incident took place.”
Asked about “The Kashmir Files”, Akhilesh Yadav said, “Will The Lakhimpur Files also be made?” He said if farmers were trampled by vehicles in Lakhimpur-Kheri, why can’t a film be made on it.
While BJP-governed states have declared the movie ‘tax free’, even some Congress leaders have started suggesting that it should be watched. Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel organised a special screening on Wednesday. Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, “The film will be remembered as a milestone in India’s cinematic journey.”
