PATNA: The police and district authorities have ruled out spurious liquor as the cause of deaths of over a dozen people in Banka, Bhagalpur and Madhepura between March 18 and March 20. After investigations, the respective district administrations have submitted their reports to the home department, stating that all deaths occurred due to illness.
According to official records, 10 people died in Banka’s Amarpur block, four in Sahebganj block of Bhagalpur and three in Diggi village in Madhepura during this period. ADG (HQ) J S Gangwar said the family members of the deceased admitted that their kin died due to prolonged illness. “The joint probe by SDO and SDPO, Banka, revealed that no post-mortem was done since the family members of the deceased had already cremated the bodies before the police learnt about them. The statements of all the family members and relatives of the deceased were recorded. Therefore, till now the investigation has not confirmed any death due to hooch,” he said.
Gangwar told reporters that autopsies of two people were conducted in Bhagalpur but the cause of death was not clear from the viscera report. The report has been sent to the forensic science laboratory.
The opposition in Bihar lashed out at the state government. Leader of the opposition in the state assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav mocked the government for roping in drones and helicopters to tackle illegal liquor manufacturing and trade in the state. “In the past six months, over 200 deaths have occurred. CM, government and administration is corrupt and has failed. No action has ever been taken against any of the officials (sic),” his tweet read.
