PILIBHIT: Delegates of over 200 farmers’ outfits from 20 states across India have formed a new front, the ‘MSP Guarantee Kisan Morcha’, to make the guarantee on minimum support price a “national issue”.
Farmer leaders nominated coordinators for the new front at a meeting in Delhi on Tuesday evening. They will now constitute district-level panels in their respective states to organise awareness programmes about the MSP guarantee. No factions of the BKU or any unions from the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha were invited, sources said.
“Nominated coordinators will give details about performance of the new front within the next two months on May 22 in New Delhi. In order to make a national assessment of the awareness programmes, a national-level convention would be held in Delhi on October, 6, 7, and 8,” said VM Singh, coordinator for the state of UP. Leaders agreed on a format for a separate flag for the new front.
The flag of the new front encapsulates all aspects – MSP for vegetables and fruits, food grains, pulses, and milk. Many farmer organisations that could not get information about the meeting are expected to join the campaign later to strengthen the movement, Singh said. If MSP was legally guaranteed to farmers, their increased income would make a huge impact on the country’s GDP growth, farmer leaders said. This would also usher in the “PM’s dream of making India a $5-trillion economy”, they claimed.
