PUNE/ NEW DELHI: Around 42% of the 48 adverse events causally linked to Covid vaccination were anxietyrelated, whereas rest were vaccine product-related or expected reactions like allergy or nausea and vomiting, shows a latest assessment by the government of adverse events following immunisation (AEFI).
The report underlines that the benefits of vaccination are overwhelmingly greater than a small risk of harm. The report, published on August 26, is based on evaluation of 78 cases, of which 48 were found to have “consistent causal association to vaccination”.
“Of these 48 cases, 28 were vaccine product-related reaction and 20 were immunisation anxiety-related reaction,” it said. Vaccine product-related reactions are expected reactions that can be attributed to vaccination based on current scientific evidence. For instance. such reactions are allergy and anaphylaxis. The latter can be serious, but incidence has so far been low.
About 83.3 crore vaccine doses were administered till 8pm on Wednesday. While the average number of daily vaccinations is increasing, adverse event reporting has dropped significantly, officials said. This could be due to various factors but experts emphasise the need for careful reporting, which helps in monitoring safety issues as also other scientific parameters, an official said.
Apart from the 48 adverse reactions, 22 cases were found to have inconsistent causal association to vaccination (coincidental and not linked to vaccination), including seven deaths. Seven other cases, including two deaths, were in indeterminate category — reactions which have occurred soon after vaccination but there is no definitive evidence that these events could have been caused due to the vaccine.
