NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the National Testing Agency to declare the NEET-UG results of children of resident-Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) and ordered the authorities to consider them for admission to MBBS courses in government medical colleges.
This order from a bench of Justices S Abdul Nazeer and Krishna Murari came on a bunch of petitions filed by children of OCI parents, who’ve been residing in India for the past seven to 17 years, challenging a notification barring them from competing for general category MBBS seats in government colleges.
After hearing the petitioners’ advocates and ASG Aishwarya Bhati, the SC told the petitioners: “You want to have the best of both countries. Though you’ve been staying in India for 7-8 years, you have not taken up Indian citizenship, which makes your allegiance to the country suspect. NRIs that way are better. Though an NRI works and earns abroad, he maintains his allegiance to the country.
“The other possible fear of the government emanates from the fact that since you have not given up citizenship of a foreign country, your children will use the resources of India and then run away to earn more,” the SC said before allowing resident-OCIs’ children to be considered for admissions against general seats for this academic year only.
