The position has been vacant since December 17, 2021, when KV Subramanian demitted the office.
An IIM-Ahmedabad graduate, Nageswaran teaches international economics, exchange rates, and financial markets at leading B-Schools in Singapore as well as India. He also holds a doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
Prior to his appointment, Nageswaran has also been a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India from 2019 to 2021. In October, 2021, he was not included in the reconstituted council.
He was also worked as a dean of the IFMR Graduate School of Business and a visiting professor of Economics at Krea University.
CEA in the finance ministry is a key contributor to the government’s overall strategy in managing the economy and offers a critique of the hits and misses through the Economic Survey.
The Economic Survey, is expected to be tabled in Parliament by the finance minister on Monday and is is being prepared by Sanyal and his team.
Unlike previous years, the Survey is expected to be a single-volume document this year.
The search panel for the CEA is headed by 15th Finance Commission chief NK Singh and includes secretaries from the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). The panel had received 10-12 applications for the post. The last date for applications was November 15.
