apple: After chargers, Apple may take away the charging port from iPhones too – Rashtra News

The European Commission has proposed making it mandatory for smartphone brands and other electronic manufacturers to launch products with a common charging port. If the proposal is adopted by the European Parliament then brands will have 24 months to comply. The proposal mandates that devices must be launched with a common USB Type-C port only. This may not have much impact for Android brands but it is expected to affect Apple who is still relying on Lightning port for its iPhones.
Now, Apple has two choices: either launch the iPhones with a Type-C port or get rid of changing ports altogether in future. How is that possible? As per a report by The Verge, a spokesperson for the European Commission confirmed that “if a device charges only wirelessly, then there is no requirement to integrate a USB-C charging port.”
The new proposal by the European Commission is aimed to reduce electronic waste and will encourage smartphone users to reuse chargers.
Apple has already introduced its new MagSafe wireless charging technology along with its range of accessories in 2020 with the launch of the iPhone 12 series. And as the MagSafe ecosystem develops over the years, it may be quite possible that Apple takes away the charging port altogether from the iPhone. There will not be any question of Lightning or Type-C ports when the iPhone will be completely portless.
There’s enough time for this to happen and Apple needs to come up with technology to boost the wireless charging speeds. The technology is already there. Both OnePlus and Xioami have showcased 50W and 80W wireless charging capabilities that can fully charge a smartphone in a record time.
Apple didn’t think much before removing the headphone jack nor did it hesitate while removing the charging adapter from the box. Now, with the MagSafe charging technology already in place, Apple may take another bold step by removing the charging port altogether.
As far as compliance with wireless charging is concerned, the European Commission is said to be “harmonising” fast charging technology to prevent different producers from unjustifiably limit the charging speed. “It will help to ensure that charging speed is the same when using any compatible charger for a device,” it added.
So, all that Apple needs to do is comply with the wireless charging limit requirements and end up making more money by selling wireless chargers.
