HIGHLIGHTS
- Steve Smith wants his Australian mates to keep the pressure on struggling England at the SCG
- A shambolic 3rd Test loss at Melbourne had completed England’s meek surrender of the urn
- Smith, too, has struggled for runs and hopes to regain form in the 4th Test at Sydney
Having secured the urn on the back of an unassailable 3-0 lead, Steve Smith has urged Australia to keep the pressure on as struggling England try to salvage some pride going into the 4th Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
“I think the guys are in a really good place. We’ve played some really good cricket so far and you know, we’re still a young side building together as a group and we want to keep getting better as a team. So, you know, whilst we’ve got the foot on the throat, so to speak, we want to continue that momentum and have another good week out here in Sydney,” Smith was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Smith has been a vital cog in Australia’s batting setup but the right-hander has struggled for consistency of late. Barring his first-innings 93 at the Adelaide, Smith has not managed to go past 16 runs in the last three matches of the ongoing series. His last hundred dates back to 7th January 2021 when he scored 131 runs in the first innings against India at the SCG.
“It’s been a little while since I’ve scored a hundred, but I got close in Adelaide. I think we’ve played on some bowler-friendly wickets the first three Tests. They haven’t been huge scoring games so it’s been tough to find the rhythm and get into a groove. But, hopefully, this week I can spend a lot of time out there and score a big one and help us continue to have success as a team,” Smith said ahead of the 4th Test at the SCG.
Amid rising cases of Covid-19 in the ongoing series, England will be eager to make amends for their previous debacle when they take the field at the SCG against Australia in the 4th Test slated to begin from 5th January.
