Pakistan’s Supreme Court will continue hearing on Tuesday the Opposition’s appeal against the dismissal of the no-trust vote against Prime Minister Imran Khan and the subsequent dissolution of Parliament.
If Khan gets a favourable ruling, elections will take place within 90 days. If the court rules against the deputy speaker, Parliament will reconvene and hold the no-confidence vote against the embattled prime minister, experts said.
Even as the matter is pending in court, Imran Khan has nominated a caretaker prime minister who will lead the government till fresh elections are held. Khan, however, will continue as prime minister till a caretaker PM is appointed.
HERE ARE THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AROUND PAKISTAN’S POLITICAL CRISIS:
1. On Monday, while hearing the case, the chief justice rejected the Opposition’s plea for a full bench. During arguments, judges noted that there were violations in the proceedings of the no-trust resolution, and expressed doubt over the deputy speaker’s constitutional authority to pass such a ruling. Chief Justice Bandial said the court would issue a “reasonable order” on the issue.

Khan will continue as the prime minister till the appointment of a caretaker PM.
3. The US State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said the country supports peaceful upholding of constitutional and democratic principles in Pakistan, which is engulfed in political turmoil. Price rejected claims that the US is interfering in the internal affairs of Pakistan and tried to topple the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan, asserting that “we do not support one political party over another.”

5. On Sunday, April 3, Imran Khan survived the Opposition’s attempt to oust him from power after a no-confidence motion against him was rejected by the National Assembly deputy speaker, who claimed it was a “foreign conspiracy”. Afterwards, Imran Khan advised the President to dissolve the National Assembly. Accordingly, the National Assembly was dissolved and elections will take place in Pakistan within the next 90 days.
