PATNA: A panchayat in Bihar’s Saharsa allegedly tried to get a 16-year-old Dalit gang-rape survivor to “settle the case” for a Rs 70,000 payout before word reached chief minister Nitish Kumar, leading to the arrest of the main accused on Saturday from West Bengal’s Siliguri, reports Faryal Rumi.
Rejecting the settlement, the girl’s parents had approached an NGO for help since the local police station allegedly refused to probe the case. When Sonbarsa MLA Ratnesh Sada got to hear of the incident, he wrote to the CM. An FIR was registered in Saharsa on March 2 against four suspects under Section 375 (punishment for rape) of the IPC and the Pocso Act.
Saharsa SP Lipi Singh said a court remanded the main accused in judicial custody. “The victim’s statement was recorded before a magistrate on Saturday. She underwent a medical test at Sadar Hospital. The other three suspects will be arrested soon,” the officer said. Mahila police station SHO Premlata said the main accused along with his accomplicesallegedly abducted the girl on February 24when she was returning home from a rally.
The police are trying to identify the persons present at the panchayat meeting. The SP said a special investigating team has been constituted to probe the case. “Action will also be taken against sarpanch, mukhiya and other members of the panchayat for the insensitive decree…,” the SP added. The police team has been asked to identify all the members involved in the judgment,” the SP said.
