NEW DELHI: Further reducing the area in Arunachal Pradesh where the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act shall remain applicable over the next six months, the Centre on Friday declared Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts as well as two police stations in Namsai district as ‘disturbed area’ within AFSPA purview.
Earlier, besides the three districts of Tirap, Changlang and Longding, four police stations – Namsai and Mahadevpur in Namsai district, Roing PS in Lower Dibang Valley and Sunpura PS in Lohit district – were declared as ‘disturbed area’ under AFSPA from April 2019 to September 30, 2021.
From Friday, AFSPA stands withdrawn from the areas falling under Roing and Sunpura police stations. This followed a fresh review of the law and order situation in the said three districts and other districts of Arunachal bordering Assam.
Areas under AFSPA in Arunachal has been reviewed and reduced from time to time.
While Tirap, Changlang and Longding have figured in the ‘disturbed area’ list all along, all districts bordering Assam that were earlier declared as disturbed were reduced to a 20 km belt bordering Assam in 2014. In May 2016, the applicability of AFSPA was further reduced to 3 districts and 16 police stations of 9 districts. By October 2017, the number came down to 3 districts and 11 police stations across 8 districts; by April 2018, to 3 districts and 8 police stations of 6 districts; by April 2019 to 3 districts and 4 police stations in three districts; and now, to three districts and 2 police stations in one single district.
