NEW DELHI: Banking on forecasts of normal and fairly well distributed rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season, the agriculture ministry on Tuesday set a new record target of foodgrain production in the country for the 2022-23 crop year. The target of 328 million tonnes is 3.7% higher than the estimated output of 316 million tonnes in 2021-22, raising hopes of further growth in export of farm products.
Though there are reports of the possibility of shortage of fertilisers due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the government while releasing new target of foodgrain production at a conference insisted that there will not be any problem with fertilisers and other inputs, including quality seeds, during the kharif sowing season beginning June. Paddy, pulses, oilseeds, maize and other coarse cereals are the major crops of the season.
The ministry estimates that the country would need around 35 million tonnes of fertilisers including urea, DAP, MOP, NPK and SSP during the kharif season. Urea, the most widely used fertiliser in the country, alone would cover more than 50% of the total requirement. A significant part of urea’s demand is, however, met domestically. Referring to disruption in supply chains as Russia, Ukraine and Belarus together contribute to around 11-12% of total fertiliser imports, officials said options of alternative sources were being explored to fill the gap before demand peaaks during the upcoming sowing season.
