NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called on home minister Rajnath Singh to seek additional funds for state police modernization and discuss Centre-state matters including the Burdwan blast probe being handled by the NIA.
The nearly 30-minute interaction, which came after national security advisor Ajit Doval’s meeting with her in Kolkata to discuss the Burdwan blast investigation, saw the two leaders discussing law and order situation in West Bengal and the alleged threat from Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh modules based in the state.
“Enhancing of central funds under the police modernization scheme to West Bengal was also a key item on the agenda,” a home ministry functionary said.
During her meeting with Doval in Kolkata recently, Banerjee had conceded laxity on part of the state police in their immediate response to the October 2 Burdwan blasts. The blasts had left two suspected JMB militants dead and unraveled a terror plot by the Bangladeshi outfit to launch attacks in Bangladesh and possibly in India as well.
