NEW DELHI

Will the Narendra Modi wave sweep Delhi too when the capital goes to polls early next year? According to an opinion poll, BJP is likely to emerge as the largest party and cross the magic figure with 45 seats in upcoming polls to the 70-member Delhi assembly.BJP_flags_AFP3

The ABP News-Nielsen opinion poll gives BJP’s main competitor, Aam Aadmi Party, 17 seats, much less than the 28 it got in the elections last year. The Congress has been projected to get seven seats. It projects BJP’s vote share at 38% and that of AAP at 27%. Interestingly, an opinion poll by the agency in November, gave both BJP (46) and AAP (18) one seat more with vote share of 38% and 26% respectively. Congress has been projected to gain two seats with the latest poll giving it 7 seats as compared to 5 in November.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, who was seen as having lost some political ground after resigning as CM in 49 days, still seems to be the most preferred candidate with 43% of respondents supporting his candidature for the top job. He is followed by BJP’s Harshvardhan, now a Union minister, at 39%. BJP’s Delhi unit chief Satish Upadhyay and senior party leader Jagdish Mukhi both got support from only 3% of respondents each.

As per the opinion poll, half of the respondents voiced their support for a BJP government while AAP got the thumbs up from 38%. And overall, 65% of respondents rated the performance of Kejriwal government as ‘Good/Very Good’. But nearly 74% of respondents rated the performance of the Modi government at the Centre as ‘Good/Very good’. A majority of respondents, even those intending to vote for BJP, (69%) condemned Union minister Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti’s controversial statement.
