HIGHLIGHTS
- Barcelona were knocked out of Europa League by Frankfurt
- Barcelona have had horrendous losses in the last few seasons in Europe
- Laporta has clarified the club’s position in the fiasco
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has announced on Saturday, 16 April that tickets for European games at the Camp Nou are going to be non-transferable. This comes in the aftermath of Barcelona’s horror loss in the Europa League at the Camp Nou against Eintracht Frankfurt on 15 April where the home side were outplayed by the spirited German side who hammered three goals past the Blaugrana.
Barcelona in their rebuilding season under talismanic Xavi were hoping for a strong backing from the crowd in their home stadium, but were shocked to find a sea of white jerseys. According to reports from the Spanish media, there were 30,000 away fans present in the stadium despite Barcelona capping the away presence at just 5000 tickets.
It was further reported that many season ticket holders had sold their tickets to the away fans, possibly hoping to make a quick buck.
Laporta on Saturday in no uncertain terms clarified the same and confirmed that Barcelona did not sell tickets to away fans and it is obvious that people who bought home tickets sold it to Frankfurt fans.
“We do not want this to happen again at Barca and we will take action: The measures that I can announce and that we have adopted are that for international competition, tickets will be non-transferable,” the president said.
“The club is not to blame for people breaking the rules, we applied all the measures we could to avoid it,” he added,” Laporta further added.
Barcelona have been knocked out of Europe prematurely once again, in another surrender – a feature that has been common for the club in the past 5 European seasons.
Barcelona are way off from their title push in LaLiga and might have to remain without a major silverware this season.
