HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ross Taylor announced his international retirement on Thursday
  • The senior batter will play Tests for the last time when New Zealand host Bangladesh
  • Taylor will bid goodbye to international cricket after the limited-overs series against Australia and Netherlands

New Zealand are preparing to give a perfect send off to Ross Taylor after the star batter announced his international retirement on Thursday. Taylor is all set to retire from Tests after the upcoming 2-match series against Bangladesh at home and from limited-overs after matches against Australia and the Netherlands in the home summer.

Taylor has been New Zealand’s mainstay since his 2007 test debut, amassing a New Zealand record 7,584 runs in 110 matches at an average of 44.87.

One of only four New Zealanders to play 100 tests, he also holds the nation’s record in one-day international runs (8,581) and centuries (21), and was the world’s first to play in 100 internationals in all formats.

Head coach Gary Stead heaped praise on Taylor, saying that New Zealand will miss him once he is gone. He also highlighted that their senior batter is determined to go out on a high.

Taylor had struggled to put bat to ball during their Test tour of India. The star batter managed just 20 runs from 4 innings in India as speculation over his retirement grew. However, the 37-year-old will be hoping to use all his experience and make sure his last dance is as memorable as his career.

NEW ZEALAND WILL MISS TAYLOR

“His experience has held the side together on countless occasions and his catching record speaks for itself. There’s no doubt we’re going to miss him when he’s gone.

“I know Ross is really focused on performing well in these remaining series and going out on the right note,” Stead said on Thursday.

New Zealand will not have captain Kane Williamson for the 2-Test series, starting January 1 in Mount Maunganui against Bangladesh. Tom Latham is all set to lead the side but the return of Trent Boult and Neil Wagner will be a big boost to their chances of dominating the visitors.

New Zealand dropped their star spinner Ajaz Patel, who scripted history by picking up all 10 wickets in an innings in the 2nd Test against India in Mumbai.

On the other hand, Bangladesh need to use all their grit and determination to survive the pace threat from New Zealand without their star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.
