DHANGADI, JANUARY 11
Hailstorms have damaged crops in the southern belt of Doti and the Churiya belt of Kailali districts. Hailstone accompanied by rain battered Kailali’s Chure range and Mohanyal Rural Municipality and Doti’s Badikedar and Jorayal rural municipalities last evening.
According to Doti’s Badikedar Rural Municipality Chairperson Krishna Bahadur Chand, attempts are on to collect details of the damage caused by the hailstorm to crops.
DB Kathayat, a farmer of Sahajpur, Ward 3 Chure, said the hailstorm damaged winter crops, vegetable and fruit plantation.
“Hailstones battered wheat and barley crops badly and destroyed potato and other plants,” said the farmer, adding that the freak weather had dashed their hope of a bumper harvest and a handsome income.
As for the impact on fruit plantation, oranges ready to be picked and sent to the market have been knocked off the tree.
Though most of the oranges have already been sold, there were a few oranges yet to be picked and they received the brunt of the extreme weather.
Farmers concerned have asked their local levels and agriculture knowledge centre to collect details of the damage and provide compensation for the damage.
